Due to the BP oil spill and the devastating wake-up call the disaster is sending, I am unable to rationalize continuing to work with synthetic hair, as it is a petroleum product. I enjoy creating and wearing fake hair, and I also realize that to continue working with it will bring deep guilt and sadness.

I can't remove petroleum from my life. It.s in my bike tires, my paints, the caulk around my bathtub, the linoleum on my floor. But I can be more responsible in my use of it, and that.s what I want to be doing. I enjoy creating hair, but the art in my soul has more effective avenues to be shared with the world, some of which use petroleum and are more important to me.

I can give hair up, and it will make a tiny, insignificant difference. What can you give up? What can you support another person in giving up? And another? And even another? How long before the difference, and the message, is not so insignificant after all?
